Wednesday 4/26

Drizzled all night. No big hurry today, about 200 miles out and over 100 of those will be up the Clearwater and Lochsa. Turned off at White Bird Hill. The old highway went thru here and switchedbacked up the canyon wall at the head of the valley. The highway now is cut into the canyon wall and gradually falls.
The area is the site of the start of the Nez Perce war. Bottom line the Indians won a battle where the Calvary and volunteers tried to massacre them on “White Bird Hill”. That pissed the US Calvary off and we know the rest of the story. I walked the 3 mile loop and listened for far off gun shots and shouts. The best part was someone had been up the hill on horse back so there were hoof prints everywhere. Certainly added to the adventure.

Grangeville and ID13 takes you to Hwy 12. A nice quiet drive up. No traffic to speak of and what here was hit just right. Stopped at the campsites but only one open, Wilderness. Just too rainy to camp or I would of stayed. I want to fish this area this summer, so I’ll be back.

Pulled in about 4. A great trip. Already planning my next. Texas / Florida January 2018.
