Friday 1/19
Big storm coming to Utah. But it was 45 degrees when I left Kevin&Cathy’s. Big wreck with fire on the interstate right where I would normally get on, so headed south on State Street. The street numbering system (i.e.7350s) relates to the distance from the temple in Salt Lake. Blocks I think but not positive.
Eventually there is signage for the interstate and away we go. By the end of today I will have done a lot of interstate on this trip. It is boredom inter spiced by moments of concentration. I but Bill on steady at 65 mph, turn on XM Beatle station and day dream. My singing to begin with, was….terrible, but by the end of the day I felt like at least the dogs would of quit howling. “Blackbird” was a favorite. Listen to it and you will know why.
I stop to fuel in St George with the plan to get south of Mesquite to Red Rocks and spend the night. That will also get me off the interstate and back on the roads less traveled. I’m fueling in the street side lane just causally watching traffic when a car pulls out of a driveway a SMACKS a small white car which comes spinning towards me. Made me start to think where to go but really it hit the curb and stopped. I hadn’t heard that sound in a long time WHACK!! Of course traffic in slowing and stopping when, SMACK,SMMack, smack, someone wasn’t paying attention and rear ended the whole line. Must of been 7-8 cars finally involved. I finished fueling and CAREFULLY got out of there.
The Virgin River Gorge is about 20 miles south of Saint George and I had planned to stop for lunch and continue on to Red Rocks. I eat my lunch by the river, the sun is shining, it’s starting to warm up and there is a campground to boot. So I find a site pay my $4 and park for the night. Lots of Boy Scouts, 10-12 year olds. No campsite etiquette. No safety meeting. Walked down to the river and got my feet wet. Got shorts on!!
I spent the afternoon on the computer at the picnic bench watching the clouds coming in. Big storm tonight but I think I’m far enough south that it will be rain. A very nice campground! I recommend it. Even if just for lunch.
