Friday 2/16
Nice sunrise this morning but i was too cozy to get up and take a picture. 63 this morning, which beats the tar out of 28. Cleanup day. Driving around on these dirt roads, even with all the windows closed, leaves a layer of dust on everything. So sweep, dust and shake out everything. Maybe. A lovely morning to do nothing.
Couldn’t stand it, too nice, grabbed the rod and gear, a cup of coffee and a stick. Walked west on the road. The Rio Grande is right there. Yesterday, while fishing, there was a old man riding a burro on the hill in Mexico. We acknowledged one another. He watched me and I watched him. Not every day you see a old man riding a burro in the Mexican desert. I did not take a picture. I thought about it but he wasn’t takin any pictures of me so….he finally rode down the hill to the river across from me. If i was any kind of fisherman, i should of been able to catch a fish in that Hollywood hole but, nope. He watched a while longer than said “Adios” and beat that burro like a bastard step child to get him to carry him back up the hill. No mercy.
This morning’s walk, it’s starting to overcast and after a mile or so i start looking for a unpokey way to make it to the river. There are a few game trails but they must be made by javelina. Go under a lot of stuff. I’m not good with under. I’m not great at thru and no green chair to act as my normal pusher out of the wayer. Ahh, a decent decline to the riverbed and open desert to the river channel. Nice spot. Spend a hour or so flailing around and eventually lose one of my rigs to the rock fish. You know, scrambled eggs with salsa sounds good for breakfast, it just a short walk back and yum. Except it wasn’t a short walk back it was a long walk back. A little over a hour to get back. What a great morning.
The picnic benches at these campsites are filthy. If staying more than a day i wash them. This site has a cover over the table so some protection from the sun. I also have a contour seat to sit on. Quite comfortable.
I sat outside and finished the Jack Reacher book and the western. Decided to take a stroll up a canyon close to the CG. Walking in the desert is never straight. I can see a yucca bush in bloom up a side canyon and head that way. Too pokey to get up close but a nice place to sit and scope out the terrain. The binos have been a welcome tool on my journeys. They have become a “must go” along with super camera. Lots of red birds, like cardinals. I can see where a big bird has been perched (from the bird shit) to look over this little canyon. I kinda mark it on the way out so i can pick it out when i get back to camp. Unfortunately too many twists and turns and it isn’t viewable from the CG. It’s a wonderful day, low 80s and overcast.
A couple of quesadillas for dinner and a movie; 3:10 from Yuma.
Good night.

Which Jack Reacher book are you reading? I just finished reading “No Middle Name”, which is a compilation of short stories. Except… I didn’t realize that until halfway through the book! I thought maybe I was just reading it too late at night and missing details. I thought it was just one story, told through different periods of his life. Nope. Different stories, different time periods. I felt stupid once I figured that out! 🙂
“Make me” there was a short Jack Reacher story at the end of the book also. Too much of the same. Texas Rangers next!
