Sunday 3/18
The GPS says 176 miles today. We’ll see. Overcast this morning but it normally doesn’t last. Like Montana, don’t like the weather? Stick around. I like using the GPS to get into and out of the cities. Left on my own…u-turns are my friends. Fueled (11.78) My historical stops play hell on mileage and on time. I’m going to try and snap a picture of the day’s trip on the GPS. Some interesting stuff.
Got thru Abilene which is surrounded by oil wells, cotton fields and irrigated fields of something? Flat farm country. Getting close to the Llano Estacado. Cap Rock SP today. They have a large herd of buffalo that is descended from the great hearts of the plains. Saved by wife of rancher Goodnight(?). Driving the back roads of this part of Texas is mostly driving farm country. Traveler’s note: BY far, Texan’s are the best one-finger wavers. Instigators not returners!
I don’t understand why i can’t trust the GPS. Seriously, it happened again today. Of course, i was wrong. At least i didn’t compound the error by continuing on for 5 miles. Must have something to do with authority ‘cause i changed the voice back to a man.
Cap Rock SP arrival 1:30pm. Yeah, lot better end time. Left at 8am. Starting to look like SE Utah. Red earth. Lots of canyons and arroyos. #23 is the spot “ ‘cause it’s fixin’ to blow tonight and this spot will give you some protection”(say in southern accent). Perfectly level site w/ sun protected picnic table except….it’s a bit windy, not breezy. Unload the bike and take a 6-7 mile “Canyon Rim” ride. Didn’t bring the green chair, bad. Didn’t bring the binos, bad. I like walking better than bike riding. Better pace. Head back to the schooner and put my chair back in Bill and roll the carpet up and stow it ‘cause it’s fixin’ to blow.
Saw the buffalo when i arrived but there is a exhibit a mile or so back that had steel cutouts of the herd. It’s quite windy but i dress for it, grab the green chair and go. Not a soul out and about. Nice exhibit and amphitheater. Head back to the schooner and do dinner about 8pm. Busy, windy day. Good night.
