Friday 9/27

Leisurely start this morning but a early one. The rhythm I’ve settled into is wheels rollin’ by 8-8:30. Drink my coffee in Bill. Then 10-11 look for a place to have a cup of tea and maybe a walk. Then be in my spot by 2pm. Gives me some time to walk around that afternoon. Cook dinner, clean up, study my maps and read.

So today “Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park” about 80 miles or so. Plenty of time to get there and have some fun. I have been seeing nice BLM signage “rec site” so decided to explore one. Just a decent gravel road going up into the hills. Crossed a river on a bridge and finally stopped at a cabin being retroed about 7 miles up. Getting off the road gives you a taste of what pioneers dealt with.

Had some scrambled eggs w/ english muffin before getting back on the highway. My thoughts have been that the campground in the park will be full. I have a couple of backup plans in case. Nope, not a problem. Old A32, $8.00 . Maybe stay here tomorrow, maybe move to one of my backup plan. Friday/Saturday nights are always a bigger gamble for a site.

Walked from my site to visitors center. A mile following the canyon wall. Nice water fill station at visitor center. Bought some wide postcards to send off. Nice walk back. Took some pictures but this is one of those ” you had to be there” kind of places. There is another hike I want to do’ so may stay here tomorrow.

Weather has been perfect. High 70’s lows mid 40’s. Beautiful sky, wonderful scenery. Not as magnificent as Montana, more canyon country. I like it. No coverage, so I’ll know what will happens before you. Good night.
