Wednesday 10/2

Turns out I’m not the only one over-nighting. I notice the sound of a generator about 7:30pm and investigate. It’s dark. Definitely a generator. Step down from the schooner and look back towards the road and it is LITE up. Generator powering a very large, bright light. Lit up the valley! This guy ain’t doing setup by no damn headlight. He was 300-400 hundred yards away and I watched the silhouettes for a couple of minutes. Generator ran most of the night. In the morning I could see his setup. Tundra pickup pulling a newer medium sized turtle looking trailer with a good size rack off the back, that he had this BIG generator strapped to. Colorado plate, if that matters. Still, one of the nicest spots.

What I see a lot of, is bigger RV towing small cars (or not so small, I saw a full size pickup behind a huge bus). I see a lot of Senior tent campers. Mostly in Subaru SUVs. I see a lot of nice overland trailers being pulled by nice jeeps in the large campgrounds. Don’t see too many Bill & the schooner. In the remote areas I see small SUVs with tents or vans, both nice$$ and not so nice. I don’t see poor. Occasionally, but not often. I like my rig because it’s the perfect rig, for me.

Okay Mesa Verde. Pulled in to camper registration about 11am. Different way of getting a camp site. Big store with camper registration in the middle. Not busy but I could tell by the setup it could handle some people. $17 with senior discount. Paid for tonight but I think I’ll spend 2-3 more days here. Maybe. At least tomorrow. I think I can get wifi at the Store and I’ll try to post tomorrow morning. Also a shower! Free!!

Drove out a twisty, hilly road to “The Step House”. You walk down a paved trail for 1/2 mile to the ruins. This was a extensive civilization with hundreds of these sites, big and small, here in the southwest. Go to all that work, over hundreds of years, then within a generation or two abandon it. They don’t know why. My guess, some sort of human hostility was involved. Tough life.

Tomorrow small hike. I did not do so well up in the high country. Really felt it. This is 7000′ and today was fine. Good night.
