Hovenweep NM is one of my favorites! So much to think about.
Took a morning hike around the village. It’s interesting to see it from all angles and try to grasp the whole picture of a village of maybe 50-75 people totally self sufficent. Builders and masons. Why build on top of these slabs? Why not more hidden? Were they safe? How did they choose the canyon? This whole Anasazi civilization that covers the southwest and what happened to them is interesting. The hike takes you completely around the head of the canyon and past the village, down the canyon across and back up. About 2 miles.
I did the same hike this evening. Left the schooner about 6pm. Interesting to see the shadows play out on the houses. Here’s the thing, i’m looking at something that didn’t look this way 800-1000 years ago. And the best part about it, NOBODY knows.
