N of Helmville MT.
Away we go. Almost two years since i tripped. The plan is to fish/hike/golf and see Montana while the weather stays nice as i head towards western North Dakota and Theodore Roosevelt NP. Then south into the Black Hills, maybe Crystal Cave, head east a bit tSunday 9/19
o Badlands NP, try to contact John Geiger in Colorado Springs and if that doesn’t work out head to the western side of the Rockies and head south to New Mexico. The weather will dictate my pace and route. As it gets colder head to SW Arizona and eventually end up in Palm Springs for Thansgiving. Then home before Christmas. That’s the plan.
Got going Saturday and made it to Moose Creek CG off HWY 200 near Helmville turnoff. Cold, cloudy and windy…..the stuff that drives me south. Left Sunday about 9am after deciding to follow Hwy 12 to Harlowtown then 191 to Big Timber. Nice drive, 50-55 mph, no traffic. Followed the Musselshell for awhile, thought about camping but that country is the High Lonesome and the wind was windy. Found a spot on the Yellowstone River to spend the night. High clouds, blue sky and windy! Took a nice walk along a old road that followed the river. Bit of rain. Steak sandwich with rice for dinner. Finish sorting out where everything goes and spent awhile trying to figure out where i placed some things in it’s perfect spot. But everything is accounted for.
Tomorrow will be a short travel day as i want to camp on the Stillwater River south of Columbus, most likely 30-40 miles away. Fish a couple of days and make contact with Bob Guaghn for some golf and maybe park in Jim Ridgway’s driveway overnight. Then follow the Yellowstone north.

  1. Keep practicing your golf game, and the elusive Newman open jacket will finally be yours next year!
