Saturday 2/3
I sweated last night. The expected low was 27, so i bundled up. At 7 CST this morning 52. Not complaining. Had tenters next to me last night. A young overweight (not making judgement just describing) couple from Texas. Normally, no one ever comes out of their RV so I have the whole campground to myself. Tenters have no where to go so they hang out with bright lanterns and talk. Yep, talk. Or maybe they were chanting, I’m not sure i could hear the difference. They were standing up facing each other, so most likely talk. That real awkward distance away. Far enough that i didn’t introduce myself but close enough to acknowledge with a wave. Camping.
Out early after doing some dishes and sweeping the floors. I’m going to go thru Alpine TX on the way back south. Big town in the area Pop:5409. Bigger than Marfa. My phone says SOL on coverage….i have pasted a couple of cell towers in the last 50 miles so restart my phone and back in business. FaceTime the Moores, check some mail stuff and pay bills. On to Marfa and Presidio-the oldest city in this spot, in the universe. Stop at Fort Leaton SP and get ready for Big Bend State Park- BBSP. Pay another $12 to camp tonight at Arenosa Primitive Site. Number 4 it’ll be tonight. This road is as good as it gets!!! Slow, curvy follows the Rio Grande and the US/Mexico border. That’s Mexico across the river! This is also one of the premiere “Dark Sky” spots in the world. Undiscovered, everyone flocks to the NP, which is nice now, I’m going to camp there, but this is uncrowded and more unstructured. I’m all about unstructured.
I will try some pictures tonight. It’s 5:00pm, i ‘ve been on a couple of little hikes… jaunts, first with crocs, bad, bad, Boots buddy, boots! Second one, full regalia, boots, pack, stick, sun hat, 10mm, green chair, could of done 8 miles. but settled for getting around the point and down to the water. I want a nice, good looking straw/reed airy wide brim hat and I’m thinking texas is where to get it. The REI hat is functional but, no nothing, like a piece of army gear. No style. I’m lookin’.
The real park is 27 miles out a #3 gravel, in the middle of nowhere. Started out it, today, just to see the condition and the area. I’m tempted to backtrack 27 miles to Fort Leaton, but really 40 miles to Presidio, refuel, regrocery, update TTRLT.N and head out to Sauceda Ranger Station for a couple of days.
