Tuesday 2/20
Day breaks about 7:10 or so. I laid in bed till 8:10. No big plans, do some homey stuff, do some dishes, maybe drive to Rio Grande Village and take in the sights. A bit of traffic, both coming and going this morning. The schooner is getting to be in ship shape condition. Everything has a place and everything is in it’s place. Right girls? I don’t have too many catastrophes, i did have a whole # of Folger coffee tumble out of the upper cabinet and hit the floor, coffee everywhere. That was a couple of weeks ago. You just need to be thinking AND have your hands free when you open a cabinet door after off-roading. And the refrigerator, for that matter, can empty on you if your hands aren’t free.
Got everything cleaned up and packed up to head to Rio Grande Village. I could of left some stuff at PC1 but you never know, so normally when i leave, i don’t have to come back. The difference in effort is minimal. Two and half miles back to pavement. Windows down and XM loud enough to drown out Bill’s rumble. Native American flute music this morning. Pass a few rigs going up, it’s all just double track and they all give the schooner the right of way. I get a few glances and can’t decide if it’s the music or that I’m shirtless wearing a headband and giving them the peace sign. You can’t always tell about people.
Hit the pavement, give Bill the gas and get going 30mph. Twenty miles to rio grande village. I settle in and get almost ten miles done before i see anything in my mirror. The limit is 45 so 30 ain’t the end of the world, let ‘em pass me. They do. Pull in to the store parking lot and go in and get some post cards and some chips. There is a picnic area so i park Bill under a shade tree and make me a ham & cheese on bagel and eat lunch.
There is no wifi at the ranger station. Oh well. Head back out to PC1. A bit more traffic so not so much dilly-dally. Once off road, it seems smoother going back to PC1. Going to be clear today, so it will get into the 80s.
I have been getting some sun on my body. Feels good, no aches! Not as much walking as i would like. I’m not limber enough to go off trail, well actually it’s coming down that gives me the most problems. Up is short steps, down is long steps and I would like to land with a force of 2 or 3 ( 1 being light, 10 being heavy) but will get to 6, where 7-8 is a slide. I’m not a great leaper, it’s more of a hard landing than a soft touchdown. But what i am good at is avoiding pointy things. I can still twist and turn and, not having as much to suck in, helps a lot. So i need trails at this point. I don’t fret about steep.
Hang out by the schooner this afternoon. Beautiful view. Glass the hills and the valley numerous times. Ribeye steak and Essence Rice for dinner then maybe some Harry Potter on the dvd. Good night.
