Tuesday 4/25
Weather isn’t agreeable. Last night’s low was 26 with blowing snow/sleet. Decided last night NOT to leave early. Make sure someone else broke trail on these roads. No worries, snow plow went thru about 5:30 and a pickup not long after. Passenger side was plastered with snow/ice and the Behemoth’s roof. Solid on windshield. Couldn’t remember were I put the ice scraper so got a piece of fire wood to clear it. On the road by 6:15, no sense dilly dallying when it’s cold. Cup of coffee, windows mostly clear, go.
Back on NV228 and within 20 miles it’s bare and dry. Beautiful open vistas. I like driving in the early morning. It’s the best time. The highway turns to ID51 and I follow it to I80 or I84. Go west bound and have about a hour to decide west or north. I had cell coverage and the weather on the coast calls for rain off and on for the next week 10 days. Nope, north it is.
Take ID55 towards McCall. It follows the Payette River up a narrow canyon. The Payette is RUNNING big time right now. A couple of places I was wishing the road was a little higher on the canyon wall. Bigger than the Lochsa I think. Unrunnable, way to big. Scary big! No campgrounds open or I would of stayed there.
Eventually I turn right on US95N which is the start of the last leg. Camp by the river, cook a steak and baked potato on the BBQ, listen to LOTR. Tomorrow home……
